POSITION: Part-Time Reference Librarian I

The Nutley Public Library seeks to fill an opening for a Part-Time Reference Librarian I position.

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

      • Graduate from a college or university with a Master’s degree in Library or Information Sciences in a library program accredited by the American Library Association (ALA).
      • Valid certification as a Professional Librarian issued by Thomas Edison State University.
      • Experience planning and promoting programming for adults.
      • Excellent written communication and customer service skills, and possesses a friendly professionalism.
      • Experience using BCCLS Polaris/LEAP.

Primary duties include, but are not limited to the following:

      • Assists library patrons of all ages (in-person, electronically, and by telephone) in finding materials, answering referencequestions, and providing reader’s advisory.
      • Provide bibliographic instruction, which includes use of the internet, on-line databases, and other print and online reference resources.
      • Plans, develops, organizes, advertises, and conducts library programs such as technology classes, library tours, book talks, film programs, reading clubs and so forth for the purpose of stimulating reading and/or to inform the community and various organizations of library services.
      • Answers technology questions and assists patrons with databases, downloadable media, and computer use.
      • Composes and prepares print and electronic public relations materials such as press releases, flyers, calendars, and brochures.
      • Contributes content, updates, and monitors the library’s website and social media.
      • Ability to identify, customize, create and present innovative programs and services, and an enthusiasm for adapting new technologies, library trends, and innovations into library service.
      • Assists in collection development.
      • Compiles statistics on attendance of programs, library materials, digital services, and collection addition reports.
      • Attends continuing education programs such as training workshops and conferences related to library services.
      • Exchanges ideas, information, and opinions with supervisors to formulate policies, procedures, programs, and so forth in relation to assigned work. Ability to work harmoniously with patrons and co-workers.
      • Performs outreach and other duties and projects as assigned.
      • Performs library in-charge duties as required.

The position is twenty (24) hours per week. Evening and weekend hours required (1-2 evenings per week/1 Saturday per two weeks).

The salary/pay rate is $31.84 per hour.  This is a civil service position (Librarian 1). Appointment will be provisional, pending NJ Civil Service procedures.
